Tell us about yourself.
I attended Colgate University where I studied history and received my J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. I was a corporate associate at two firms, specializing in secured transactions, but ended up narrowing my practice further to do just aviation finance. After I "left" the law, I worked in Melbourne, Australia on a team that prepared cases for litigation.
While I was a corporate attorney, I became frustrated with how contracts were drafted and how young associates were utilized. We'd have deal rooms with thousands of documents, each one created by opening a Word document and going through it line by line to fill in admin-type details. When I left the law and then heard about Ironclad I thought, "This is what I wanted as an attorney!" I saw a world where attorneys weren't frustrated at having to use an outdated contract creation process and I wanted to help create that world. Let lawyers be frustrated about other things!
What's your favorite win so far?
Working as Ironclad's legal engineer! I feel I'm able to experiment with our product's features a bit more than usual.
Who inspires you?
Guy Fieri. That a human can be equal parts chaos, enthusiasm, empathy, bleach, and bowling shirt is a wonderful reminder to not take myself too (too) seriously.
What career advice do you have for your younger self?
Listen, read, ask, listen.
What's the last book you've read?
"The Warburgs" by Ron Chernow.
What's something that most people would be surprised to know about you?
When I quit corporate law I sold my things, bought a one-way ticket to New Zealand, and lived out of a van for six months. 10/10, no regrets.
When you're not at work, you are ____?
I have an unhealthy obsession with donuts, so either scoping out new donut places or convincing myself to not walk into the donut place I've just scoped out.
